Kunsthaus Zürich Receives CHF 30M Endowment from Haefners for Major Exhibitions
The Facts
On May 12, 2025, Kunsthaus Zürich announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding to establish a new foundation endowed with CHF 30 million by Marianne and Martin Haefner. The 'Förderstiftung für bedeutende Ausstellungen des Kunsthauses Zürich' (Foundation for Major Exhibitions at the Kunsthaus Zürich) will provide permanent capital to fund at least one internationally significant exhibition per year. Museum president Philipp Hildebrand called it an exemplary model of sustainable, long-term private cultural support and noted the foundation is open to additional patrons. Director Ann Demeester said the endowment gives the museum the confidence to think ambitiously.
The Signal
The endowment model is rare in Switzerland and signals a strategic shift toward long-term financial independence for public museums. For collectors and curators, the guarantee of annual major exhibitions strengthens the Kunsthaus's ability to attract international loans and blockbuster shows, enhancing its stature alongside institutions like the Louvre. The Haefner's commitment also underscores the growing importance of private-public partnerships in sustaining cultural institutions amid public budget pressures.
