The Facts

The 130th annual general meeting of the Zürcher Kunstgesellschaft on May 26, 2025, approved the 2024 annual report and financial statements by a large majority. The Kunsthaus Zürich reported 513,162 admissions in 2024, remaining Switzerland's most-visited art museum, with strong demand for exhibitions such as Wong/van Gogh and Marina Abramović. The annual deficit was reduced to CHF –1,529,489 in 2024 from CHF –1,585,979 in 2023, about 50% better than budgeted. A new endowment by Marianne and Martin Haefner, with initial capital of CHF 30 million, establishes a 'Foundation for Major Exhibitions at the Kunsthaus Zürich' to fund at least one major international exhibition per year.

The Signal

The structural deficit remains a key challenge, driven by higher operating costs since the opening of the Kunsthaus extension. The Zürcher Kunstgesellschaft applied for an additional subsidy from the City of Zurich in October 2024, with a decision expected in summer 2025. The target is to balance the budget by 2027 while maintaining a public-private partnership model. The Haefner endowment, open to additional donations, signals a strategic shift toward private funding sources to complement public support, a model that positions the Kunsthaus as a test case for museum sustainability in Switzerland.
