Kunsthaus Zürich Releases Raphael Gross Report on Bührle Collection Provenance
The Facts
Prof. Raphael Gross has completed and published his expert report reviewing the existing provenance research into the Bührle Collection, which has been on long-term loan to the Kunsthaus Zürich since October 2021. The report was commissioned in May 2023 by the City and Canton of Zurich and the Zürcher Kunstgesellschaft to determine whether any works in the collection were confiscated as a result of Nazi persecution. Gross presented the report to the commissioning bodies and the independent Round Table on June 26, 2024, and it is now available on the Kunsthaus Zürich website. The commissioning bodies will analyze the report and issue an initial response by mid-July 2024.
The Signal
The publication of this report marks a significant step in the ongoing scrutiny of the Bührle Collection, one of Europe's most prominent private collections with contested wartime provenance. For collectors and institutions, this review underscores the heightened legal and ethical standards surrounding Nazi-looted art, particularly for works displayed in public museums. The commissioning bodies' commitment to transparency, including the public release of the report, signals a broader institutional strategy to address historical gaps and maintain public trust. The outcome may influence how other museums handle provenance research and restitution claims, setting a precedent for rigorous independent review in the field.
