Kunsthaus Zürich to Host First Swiss Museum Retrospective of Vilhelm Hammershøi
Kunsthaus Zürich will present the first comprehensive museum exhibition in Switzerland devoted to Danish artist Vilhelm Hammershøi from 3 July to 25 October 2026. The show titled ‘Vilhelm Hammershøi. The Eye That Listens’ surveys the painter’s subtle interiors, cityscapes and landscapes, including works by Jacobus Vrel, Adolph Menzel and Michaël Borremans that place him in a broader art-historical context. It is curated by Jonas Beyer and Sandra Gianfreda and organised in cooperation with the Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza in Madrid.
The Signal
The retrospective highlights Hammershøi’s reduced colour palette and recurring motifs, qualities that align his practice with later artists such as Giorgio Morandi and underscore his continuing relevance for contemporary collectors of restrained, atmospheric painting. By foregrounding the musical dimension of his work and its international connections, the exhibition signals institutional interest in reassessing Nordic modernism within European networks rather than in isolation.
