On March 14, 2023, Kunsthaus Zürich announced a new strategy for provenance research, adopting a proactive approach to identify cultural property confiscated as a result of Nazi persecution. The strategy includes professional review standards, just and fair solutions for unlawfully held works, increased transparency, and additional resources. The museum will prioritize its own collection and new acquisitions, systematically reviewing works created before 1945 that changed hands between January 1933 and May 1945. An independent, international commission of experts will support research until a national solution is established, to be set up by autumn 2023. The Zurich Cantonal Council has been asked to allocate CHF 1 million over the coming years, with support also from the Federal Office of Culture.
