The Facts

Kunsthaus Zürich has published a new strategy for provenance research in its collection, adopting a proactive approach to works that may constitute cultural property confiscated as a result of Nazi persecution. The strategy includes professional review, quality standards, just and fair solutions for substantiated unlawful holdings, and increased resources and transparency. An independent, international commission of experts will support provenance research until a national solution is established, with the commission to be set up by autumn 2023. The Zürcher Kunstgesellschaft, which owns the collection, is responsible for implementation and decisions on just and fair solutions. Director Ann Demeester stated that the museum bears a great social responsibility and that a proactive approach with maximum transparency is essential.

The Signal

The strategy signals a significant institutional commitment to addressing Nazi-era looted art, a complex and historically sensitive area for Swiss museums. By strengthening its team and creating new positions, with support from the Federal Office of Culture and the Canton of Zurich—including a CHF 1 million funding request for the coming years—Kunsthaus Zürich is positioning itself as a leader in provenance research among Swiss institutions. The move reflects growing global pressure on museums to systematically review collections and adopt transparent restitution policies, and it sets a benchmark for other museums in Switzerland and beyond.
