Lehmann Maupin to Represent Chantal Joffe in Asia, Plans Seoul and Beijing Presentations
The Facts
Lehmann Maupin has announced its representation of London-based artist Chantal Joffe in Asia. New work by Joffe will debut at the gallery's presentation at KIAF Art Seoul, running October 13–17, followed by a solo pop-up in Beijing opening October 23. Joffe previously had a solo exhibition at Lehmann Maupin Seoul from November 12, 2020 to January 29, 2021. The artist will continue to be represented by her long-time gallery Victoria Miro. Rachel Lehmann, co-founder of Lehmann Maupin, said, "After debuting her work in Seoul last year, we are delighted to officially welcome Chantal Joffe to the program. Chantal has positioned herself as one of the leading painters of her generation."
The Signal
Joffe's figurative paintings, often depicting women and exploring themes of motherhood, feminism, and intimacy, have drawn praise for their psychological depth and gestural style. Nicholas Cullinan, director of the National Portrait Gallery, London, noted her "significant contribution to the evolution of contemporary portraiture." The representation signals Lehmann Maupin's continued expansion in Asia and underscores growing regional interest in Joffe's work, which has been exhibited internationally at institutions including the Whitechapel Gallery, Royal Academy of Arts, and Jewish Museum, New York.
