Leiko Ikemura Joins 'TOKYO ATLAS' Exhibition With Giant Sculpture
Lisson Gallery announced that Leiko Ikemura has been named a participating artist in 'TOKYO ATLAS', the inaugural international art exhibition in Tokyo's waterfront district. Showcasing site-specific works by both Japanese and international artists including Yayoi Kusama, Kenta Ishige, Rui Mizuki, and Yao Zhao, the exhibition will transform urban spaces such as parks and underground parking lots. A centerpiece will be Ikemura's approximately 6-meter-tall sculpture installed on the beach of Odaiba Seaside Park. The exhibition is organized by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, the Tokyo International Cultural and Arts Festival Executive Committee, and the Tokyo Metropolitan Foundation for History and Culture, and debuts this year as part of 'ARTE TOKYO', spanning Odaiba, Aomi, and Tennozu areas.
The Signal
Ikemura's large-scale outdoor sculpture represents a strategic move by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government to activate its waterfront through ambitious public art, a model seen in global cities like London and Hong Kong. For collectors, this institutional commission signals Ikemura's rising stature in public art and the potential for her monumental works to gain long-term civic value, while the high-profile site underscores Tokyo's commitment to integrating contemporary art into urban infrastructure.
