The Facts

On June 29, 2026, Lisson Gallery announced that Leiko Ikemura will participate in the Bangkok Art Biennial. Founded in 2017, the biennial aims to establish Bangkok as Southeast Asia's leading contemporary art destination, occupying public spaces including temples and heritage sites over a four-month period. Ikemura, known for luminous paintings, drawings, watercolours, and glazed terracotta sculptures, studied at Osaka University of Foreign Studies and the University of Fine Arts in Seville. Her recent international exhibitions include Motherscape at the Albertina in Vienna (2025) and the Bienal de São Paulo (2025).

The Signal

The participation underscores Lisson Gallery's commitment to expanding Ikemura's presence in Asia, following her recent institutional shows in Europe and South America. For collectors, the biennial offers a platform to engage with her work in a non-traditional setting, bridging Rattanakosin heritage with contemporary urbanism. The event reinforces Bangkok's growing role as a hub for international contemporary art, particularly within the biennial circuit.
