Lisson Gallery Announces Leiko Ikemura's 'Motherscape' at Albertina in Vienna
The Facts
On June 4, 2026, Lisson Gallery announced the exhibition "Motherscape" by Japanese Swiss artist Leiko Ikemura at the Albertina in Vienna. The show features paintings, drawings, sculpture, and an animated film, with scenography by the artist's husband, architect Philipp von Matt. Ikemura's hybrid creatures in bronze and terra-cotta are displayed, including works like Gelber Hase (Yellow Hare) from 1994, which echoes Albrecht Dürer's Young Hare. The exhibition also includes the bronze sculpture Usagi Kannon Janus (340), standing eleven feet tall, created after the Fukushima disaster, and illuminated by glass sculptures and the artist's film Carpe Diem (2025). The show explores Ikemura's concept of "motherness" as a nonbinary metaphor for creation.
The Signal
The exhibition signals Ikemura's continued expansion into large-scale public sculpture and new media, while her fluid movement between media blurs distinctions between sculpture, painting, and design. For collectors, the inclusion of works spanning from 1992 to 2025 demonstrates the artist's sustained practice and evolution. The collaboration with the Albertina, a major museum, and the integration of her husband's architectural scenography, underscores the interdisciplinary nature of her work, which may appeal to institutions seeking immersive, cross-medium installations.
