The Facts

On November 6, 2026, Lisson Gallery announced that Marina Abramović’s ‘Historical Works and Transforming Energy’ opens at the Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea in Rome on November 18, 2026. The exhibition, marking Abramović’s eightieth birthday, is curated by Shai Baitel, Andrea Tarsia and Abramović herself and spans landmark performances including Imponderabilia (1977), Balkan Baroque (1997) and The Artist Is Present (2010), alongside her ongoing Transitory Objects series. A second Rome project, Confession (2026), commissioned by Fondazione Alda Fendi – Esperimenti with Factum Arte, will be unveiled beneath the Arch of Janus on November 19, 2026. The exhibition remains on view until April 4, 2027.

The Signal

The show gives a state museum platform to the full arc of Abramović’s practice, pairing canonical performances with participatory sculptures that ask visitors to engage physically. It also links the gallery retrospective to a public commission in an ancient Roman setting, underscoring how Abramović’s work has moved from the margins of performance art to the center of institutional and civic programming. For collectors, the timing around her eightieth birthday and the Rome presentation reinforces the artist’s blue-chip standing.
