The Facts

On October 6, 2026, Lisson Gallery announced that Susan Hiller's work is the subject of 'Bad Dreams', a major survey opening at KW Institute for Contemporary Art in Berlin on October 17, 2026. The exhibition, the first of its kind in Berlin, spans five decades of Hiller's multimedia practice, exploring dreams, trance, hallucinations, and spirituality. It features ambitious audiovisual works including 'Belshazzar's Feast' (1983–84), 'Dream Screens' (1996), 'Wild Talents' (1997), 'Channels' (2013), and 'Resounding' (2013), alongside rarely seen 'Home Truths' paintings from the 1980s, large-scale photographs from the 'Levitations' series (2011), and sculptural works such as 'Homage to Joseph Beuys' and 'Outlaw Cowgirl'. The exhibition runs through January 10, 2027.

The Signal

Hiller, a groundbreaking figure in conceptual and multimedia art, continually questioned the boundaries between the familiar and the unexplained. The survey highlights her pioneering engagement with the internet as an artistic medium, treating it as a repository of collective desires and beliefs. For collectors and curators, this exhibition underscores Hiller's enduring influence on contemporary art, particularly her ability to charge ordinary objects with meaning through association and context, making it a significant moment to reassess her legacy.
