The Facts
On October 6, 2026, the Centre Pompidou announced a comprehensive retrospective of Franco-Senegalese filmmaker Alain Gomis, running until October 20 at the mk2 Bibliothèque in Paris. The program includes all of his feature films—from his 2001 debut L'Afrance through Andalucia (2007), Aujourd'hui (2011), Félicité (2017), and Dao (2026)—plus a selection of films chosen by Gomis and the premiere of Conversations avec Elom, an unseen work in the museum's Où en êtes-vous? collection. The retrospective also features an unedited version of Dao, which premiered at the Berlinale in 2026 and was released in theaters in April of that year, along with ten films from the Centre Yennenga, the Dakar-based post-production and training hub Gomis founded in 2022.
The Signal
Gomis's work, which explores themes of exile, colonialism, and identity, has earned international recognition, including the Silver Bear at the 2017 Berlinale for Félicité. The retrospective underscores the Centre Pompidou's commitment to expanding its cinematic programming beyond European and American canon, spotlighting African and diaspora perspectives. For collectors and curators, this institutional focus signals growing validation of African cinema as a vital contemporary art form, while Gomis's collaborative, improvisational method—exemplified by his work with cinematographer Céline Bozon and the Kasaï Allstars—offers a model for artist-led, community-based production that resonates with broader trends in socially engaged art.
