The Facts
On September 24, 2026, M+ announced the inaugural M+ Restored Festival, celebrating the culmination of a three-year initiative supported by CHANEL to restore Hong Kong New Wave films. The festival will showcase all nine M+ Restored 4K restorations across selected weekends in November and December 2026 at M+ in Hong Kong's West Kowloon Cultural District. The restored films span from the late 1960s to the early 2000s and include works by directors such as Ann Hui, Tsui Hark, and Fruit Chan. The initiative has already reached over 130 screenings across 44 cities worldwide, with premieres at Cannes, Venice, and New York film festivals.
The Signal
The festival marks a homecoming for these restored works, which have been shown internationally, and underscores M+'s role as a steward of Hong Kong's cinematic legacy. The pairing of restored classics with contemporary films highlights enduring themes of migration and identity, demonstrating the continued relevance of Hong Kong New Wave cinema. For institutions and collectors, the initiative signals a growing investment in film preservation in Asia, with CHANEL's support enabling high-quality 4K restorations that can be exhibited globally.
