The Facts

On October 5, 2026, Lisson Gallery published a profile of British artist Ryan Gander ahead of his exhibition 'Maybe', which opens at Towner Eastbourne next month. The feature, written for Frieze, examines Gander's quizzical relationship to knowledge and childhood, from marble sculptures in the series 'I is…' (2012–ongoing), based on improvised dens built by his daughter Penny, to animatronic mice created since 2018. One such work, 'Ever After: A Trilogy' (2018–2020), has been installed at the Bourse de Commerce – Pinault Collection in Paris since that museum opened in 2021. Gander, who holds a professorial role at the Royal Academy in London, has also proposed educational initiatives including the cancelled Fairfield International school project in Suffolk.

The Signal

The Frieze profile, timed to the Towner show, frames Gander as a conceptually rigorous figure whose practice deliberately moves between humor, pedagogy, and philosophy. For collectors and curators, the combination of a regional museum exhibition, a long-term Paris installation at the Pinault Collection, and his Royal Academy professorship signals growing institutional confidence in a body of work that resists fixed readings.
