Louvre to Present 'Louvre Photo' Exhibition Spanning History of Photography at the Museum
The Facts
The Musée du Louvre will open 'Louvre Photo', an exhibition exploring the museum's relationship with photography from its invention to the present day, on November 4, 2026, running through May 3, 2027. Featuring more than 300 photographs, the show includes images of the Louvre's artworks, galleries, spaces, and visitors, drawn from the museum's own archives and collections from institutions including the National Archives, the Médiathèque du Patrimoine et de la Photographie, the French National Library, the Musée d'Orsay, the Musée Carnavalet, and the Historical Library of the City of Paris. The exhibition also highlights photographic commissions ordered by the Louvre since the early 2000s, with recent work by Robert Polidori. Exhibition design is by Juan-Felipe Alarcón, with graphic design by Atelier Pierre/Pierre.
The Signal
The exhibition positions the Louvre as both subject and source of inspiration for photographers, tracing how the museum has been documented and reimagined over nearly two centuries. By drawing on extensive institutional archives and external collections, 'Louvre Photo' offers a layered institutional self-portrait that reflects broader shifts in photography, tourism, and museum history. The show is part of France's Photography Bicentenary label and official program, signaling the Louvre's commitment to engaging with its own visual legacy as a cultural landmark.
