The Facts
On October 2, 2026, Lyon & Turnbull announced that a rare lantern designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh for Miss Cranston's Ingram Street Tearooms in Glasgow will be offered in its two-day Design Since 1860 sale, with an estimate of £20,000–£30,000. The sale, taking place October 14 and 15 in Edinburgh and online, also includes Mackintosh's 1903 ladderback chair for the Willow Tearooms, estimated at £10,000–£15,000 from the collection of the late Glasgow architect Eric Sloane, plus tearooms cutlery at £1,500–£2,000. The lantern is one of only five known complete examples, with the rest held by Glasgow Life; similar lanterns hung in the White Dining Room, completed in 1901. Also offered is Mackintosh's folio of designs for Alexander Koch's 1900 Haus eines Kunstfreundes competition, estimated at £4,000–£6,000, which earned a special prize despite being incomplete.
The Signal
The auction offers collectors a rare chance to buy a Mackintosh light fitting outside institutional hands, as Glasgow Life holds the other known examples. The Eric Sloane provenance strengthens the Willow Tearooms chair's historical weight, and the Haus eines Kunstfreundes folio reflects Mackintosh's international standing after the Vienna Secession. Sustained demand is expected, with the lantern's £20,000–£30,000 estimate drawing interest from the UK and abroad.
