The Facts
The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts (MMFA) announced on October 21, 2026, that it is projecting Lydia Yakonowsky's digital artwork "Precarious Balance Theory" onto the facade of the Michal and Renata Hornstein Pavilion nightly until 11 p.m., through April 4, 2027. The work, created in collaboration with MUTEK, is the sixth iteration of the MMFA's Digital Canvas project. It presents a shifting landscape of curves, dots, marks and symbols, exploring humanity's desire to impose order on uncertainty. Yakonowsky, a Montreal-based digital artist born in 1977, transforms visual codes from statistical graphics and economic concepts into dense, ever-changing compositions. Her work has been shown at festivals in Montreal, Shanghai, Paris, Istanbul and Tokyo, and in 2026 she won the Grand Prix at SAT Fest in Montreal and the Janus award for Best Art & Experimental Film at the Jena Fulldome Festival in Germany.
The Signal
The MMFA's Digital Canvas initiative, funded by Tourisme Montréal and the Quebec government, positions public digital art as a tool for cultural tourism and urban engagement. By commissioning local artists like Yakonowsky for a long-term projection visible to nighttime pedestrians on Sherbrooke Street, the museum extends its reach beyond gallery walls and reinforces Montreal's identity as a hub for new media and digital art. The project also signals growing institutional support for screen-based and projection work as a stand-alone medium, offering artists a prominent, recurrent platform that amplifies visibility among both casual viewers and the international festival circuit where Yakonowsky already has a track record.
