Musée d'Orsay Adds Alfred Verhaeren Studio Interior to Collection
The Musée d'Orsay has added Alfred Verhaeren's "Coin d'atelier: cartons à dessins et palette devant un tabouret" to its collection. The oil-on-canvas-marouflé-on-wood painting, measuring 41.0 by 51.0 cm, depicts a studio corner with drawing portfolios and a palette before a stool. Created between 1849 and 1924, the work was previously held by the Musée du Luxembourg, the Musée du Louvre, and the Musée national d'art moderne before being assigned to the Musée d'Orsay in 1983. Its acquisition mode is unknown, though it was likely donated by the artist to the Musée du Luxembourg alongside another work.
The Signal
This acquisition adds a rare interior view by Belgian artist Alfred Verhaeren, a painter better known for still lifes, to the Musée d'Orsay's holdings. For collectors, the work's provenance—moving through multiple national institutions—underscores its historical significance and institutional validation. The painting's focus on the artist's studio tools offers insight into 19th-century artistic practice, making it a valuable reference for scholars and curators studying the period.
