The Facts
The New Museum has announced its 2027 Triennial, titled 'The Outside Expands,' which will feature more than 30 artists and collectives, making it the most international edition to date. The exhibition is supported by the Friends of the Triennial, with co-chairs including Shelley Fox Aarons, Charlotte Ford, Ken Kuchin, and Elisa Nuyten. Additional funding comes from the Toby Devan Lewis Emerging Artists Exhibitions Fund, the Neeson / Edlis Artist Commissions Fund, and international organizations such as the National Center for Art Research, Japan; Phileas – The Austrian Office of Contemporary Art; and SAHA Association. The triennial will take place at the museum's location at 235 Bowery, New York.
The Signal
The 2027 Triennial underscores the New Museum's commitment to showcasing emerging and under-recognized artists on a global scale, signaling a strategic expansion of its curatorial reach beyond typical Western art centers. For collectors and curators, this edition's emphasis on international representation may highlight new market regions and artistic practices, potentially influencing acquisition trends in contemporary art. The robust support from a wide network of donors and international foundations also reflects the growing institutional investment in large-scale survey exhibitions as platforms for discovering rising talent.
