National Gallery of Art Receives Monumental Gift from Trustee Mitchell Rales for America’s 250th

via National Gallery of Art

The National Gallery of Art announced a monumental gift from trustee Mitchell Rales made on the occasion of America’s 250th anniversary. The gift will enable the “Across the Nation” partnership program to bring masterpieces from the museum’s collection to 10 partner museums nationwide. An accompanying exhibition titled Beneath the Surface will feature some 150 photographs by 100 artists including Ansel Adams, Ruth Asawa, Thomas Moran, Gordon Parks, Paul Revere and Carrie Mae Weems, spanning 185 years of American society and industry. The National Gallery of Art’s Center for Advanced Study in the Visual Arts also announced that Aden Kumler of Universität Basel will deliver the 75th A. W. Mellon Lectures in the Fine Arts in May 2026. DC’s Jazz in the Garden series returns this summer highlighting American music, while permanent-collection spotlights and year-round programming form part of the anniversary commemoration.

Mitchell Rales's gift equips the National Gallery of Art to roll out its Across the Nation partnership program for the 250th anniversary.
