THE LEAD

Kunsthaus Zürich to Present First Swiss Retrospective of Vilhelm Hammershøi

via Kunsthaus Zürich

The Kunsthaus Zürich will stage 'Vilhelm Hammershøi. The Eye That Listens', the first comprehensive museum retrospective in Switzerland devoted to the Danish artist (1864–1916), from July 3 to October 25, 2026. Hammershøi, often called the 'Vermeer of the North', is known for sparse interiors, muted cityscapes, and figures depicted from behind, rendered with subtle gradations of subdued color. The exhibition, curated by Jonas Beyer and Sandra Gianfreda, includes less-known portraits, cityscapes, and landscapes, as well as works by Jacobus Vrel, Adolph Menzel, and Michaël Borremans to place Hammershøi in a broader art-historical context. The show was developed in cooperation with the Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza in Madrid and is supported by Albers & Co AG, the Fondation Etrillard, and the International Music and Art Foundation.
