Good morning. Mary Heilmann, painter of California light and color, has died at 86 — a loss felt from New York to San Francisco and every gallery she touched.

THE LEAD

MoMA Announces Major Expansion to House Contemporary Collection

via MoMA

The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) announced a major expansion project, adding approximately 30,000 square feet of gallery space dedicated to its contemporary art collection. The expansion will include a new wing designed by architect Diller Scofidio + Renfro, with construction beginning in 2027 and completion expected by 2030. The project will increase exhibition capacity by 20%, allowing the museum to display more works from its holdings of over 200,000 pieces. MoMA Director Glenn Lowry stated the expansion aims to address the growing scale of contemporary art practices and the museum's collecting focus.

Mary Heilmann, whose radiant abstract paintings and ceramic chairs bridged California funk and New York minimalism, leaves a rich market and deep institutional affection.

Signal of the Day

This week's auctions total just €9K, the quietest sales week in months — all eyes on calendars, not hammers.

The Week in Brief
The Pattern

This week is dominated by exhibition announcements (28 of 46 stories), with Paris as the leading city (12 stories) and no major auction or gallery representation change. The only tribute, Heilmann's death, sits apart from the institutional-forward drift of August.

Looking Ahead

On Thursday, the Guggenheim's free block party and White Cube's Marguerite Humeau installation at Kistefos both open; the week's anchor is Thaddaeus Ropac's Sean Scully stack series at Château La Coste on Sunday.
