La Biennale di Venezia Establishes Two Visitors' Lions for 61st Art Exhibition

via La Biennale di Venezia

On October 29, 2026, La Biennale di Venezia announced the creation of two Visitors' Lions awards for the 61st International Art Exhibition, 'In Minor Keys,' curated by Koyo Kouoh. The move follows the resignations of the International Jury and the current geopolitical climate. The awards—one for Best National Participation and one for participants (including artist collectives)—will be decided by ticket holders who have visited both exhibition venues (Giardini and Arsenale) between May 9 and November 22, 2026. Voting will take place from November 13 to 22 at the Arsenale, with each voter casting one vote per category.

Two visitor-awarded Lions aimed at the curated exhibition rather than the pavilions hand Koyo Kouoh's 'In Minor Keys' a public mandate before it opens.

The pattern this week

Of 89 stories, 37 were exhibition openings and only 11 auctions worth €28.4M — a calendar week, not a market week. Paris took 18 items and New York 16; the institutional north is doing the talking.
