Cleveland Museum of Art Acquires 734 Early Photographs of China From Stephan Loewentheil

via Cleveland Museum of Art

On November 3, 2026, the Cleveland Museum of Art announced the acquisition of 734 photographs of China dating from the 1850s through the early 1920s from dealer Stephan Loewentheil. The group includes approximately 400 works by 16 Chinese photographers and more than 300 by British and European practitioners, with a small number by American and Japanese photographers, selected from roughly 8,000 images Loewentheil assembled over four decades. It includes more than 150 works by Lai Fong and images by Felice Beato, John Thomson, Thomas Child, William Saunders, and Georges Morache. Curators Barbara Tannenbaum and Clarissa von Spee made the selection, and the first exhibition drawn from the acquisition is planned for winter 2028.

Seven hundred and thirty-four photographs, 1850s to the 1920s, bought outright from Loewentheil: American museums have spent a decade chasing Chinese photography, and Cleveland took a large share in one signature.

The pattern this week

Seventy-three stories in seven days, and thirty-two of them are openings — Paris alone accounts for twenty, New York fourteen. The six auctions logged €680.2 million, but the week's real weight sits with nine acquisitions and a Getty grant round; nothing on restitution or museum leadership broke the surface.

Why it matters
Roughly $245,000 per institution buys no art at all — it buys the labels and framing that decide whether a gift or a purchase ever gets looked at twice.
