The Facts
Otobong Nkanga (b. 1974, Kano, Nigeria) will receive the Sikkens Prize 2026 on October 26, 2026, in Laren, Netherlands. The Sikkens Prize honors an artist or collective pioneering in the field of color. Nkanga is recognized for revealing the origins of color in her sculptures, tapestries, drawings, and installations, which connect body and landscape, extraction and reconstruction. For the first time, the Sikkens Foundation will honor the laureate with an exhibition: Nkanga's solo show "Humus Blues" opens at Singer Laren on October 27, 2026, and runs through February 28, 2027, featuring sculptures, textiles, drawings, paintings, photographs, and poetry. Monumental works by Nkanga will also be displayed in the 30-year anniversary exhibition "ReflAction" at the AkzoNobel Art Foundation's Art Space in Amsterdam.
The Signal
The Sikkens Prize, awarded since 1953, has historically recognized figures such as Gerrit Rietveld and Piet Mondrian for their contributions to color theory and practice. Nkanga's selection signals a growing institutional focus on artists who embed materiality and ecological awareness into their practice, aligning with broader contemporary art trends around extraction, land, and postcolonial narratives. For collectors, the concurrent exhibition at Singer Laren and the AkzoNobel Art Foundation provides a rare opportunity to see a concentrated survey of Nkanga's work in the Netherlands, potentially elevating her market profile in Europe.
