The Facts
On October 22, 2026, the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation released the first installment of the Robert Rauschenberg Catalogue Raisonné, covering the artist's paintings and sculptures from 1948 to 1953. The digital edition is freely accessible online and will be followed by a print volume in winter 2027, co-published by the foundation and Gregory R. Miller & Co., New York. The volume, edited by Eric Banks, Julia Blaut, and Susan Davidson, includes catalogue entries with provenance, exhibition and publication histories, and contributions from Catherine Craft, Giorgio Di Domenico, Leah Dickerman, Darby English, Helen Molesworth, Jennifer L. Roberts, and Terry Winters. The release, timed to Rauschenberg's 101st birthday, concludes the foundation's centennial programme.
The Signal
The catalogue opens one of the least-known periods of Rauschenberg's career, a formative stretch between 1948 and 1953 that shaped his later shift away from traditional painting. By making the digital edition free, the foundation offers an authoritative record of provenance and exhibition history for collectors and researchers. The project may set a precedent for artist-endowed foundations issuing rigorous scholarship in-house, with the print volume arriving in winter 2027.
