Serpentine and The FLAG Art Foundation Launch £1 Million Biennial Art Prize
Serpentine and The FLAG Art Foundation have created a new prize that will award a total of £1 million over the next decade to five artists. Each recipient receives £200,000, establishing the UK’s largest contemporary art prize given to a single artist. The prize funds a solo exhibition that opens at either Serpentine in London or The FLAG Art Foundation in New York and is then reimagined for the partner institution. The first artist will be selected in 2026, with the inaugural exhibition opening at Serpentine in Autumn 2027 before traveling to FLAG in Spring 2028.
The Signal
The decade-long partnership between the London and New York institutions provides substantial resources and dual presentations that enable artists to develop new bodies of work at key career stages. Collectors and curators gain insight into artists selected through a nomination process and rotating international jury, with each project accompanied by a catalogue and live programme. The structure underscores institutional focus on cross-border collaboration and sustained support for contemporary practice.
