Serpentine Galleries Installs Monumental Giuseppe Penone Sculpture in Kensington Gardens Through 2026
Serpentine Galleries is presenting the outdoor monumental sculpture Albero folgorato (Thunderstruck Tree, 2012) by Giuseppe Penone on the plinth opposite Serpentine South. The bronze work, cast from a hundred-year-old willow struck by lightning in Belgium and lined with gold leaf, remains on view until August 16, 2026. The installation expands on trees as a recurring motif in Penone’s practice and connects the gallery space with the surrounding park. Last year Serpentine mounted the most comprehensive institutional exhibition of the artist in London.
The Signal
The presentation continues Serpentine’s established focus on public art, following major outdoor projects by Eduardo Paolozzi, Anish Kapoor, Lee Ufan, Christo and Jeanne-Claude, Yoko Ono, Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster, Atta Kwami, Gerhard Richter, Yayoi Kusama and Esther Mahlangu. For collectors and curators the placement signals sustained institutional commitment to large-scale sculpture in public settings and reinforces Penone’s position within that program.
