Serpentine Galleries to Present First UK Institutional Exhibition of Justin Caguiat
The Facts
Serpentine Galleries will open 'Change Ringing', the first UK institutional exhibition of new and recent works by Justin Caguiat, at Serpentine South from 8 October 2026 to 10 January 2027. The exhibition brings together painting, sculpture, printmaking, sound and film, with works that engage the building's architecture and infrastructure. Caguiat uses heat-responsive pigment so that paintings change colour and reveal shapes in reaction to temperature and light. The show also features bronze bells cast as flower and seed shapes, and a score by Lily Pickett that plays mechanically in a continuous loop, transforming the gallery into a listening instrument.
The Signal
'Change Ringing' continues Caguiat's exploration of sacred spaces and urban infrastructure, following his earlier project 'Zodiac Machine' in Madrid. The new body of work was influenced by Spanish architect Justo Gallego Martínez and his self-built Catedral de Justo. For collectors and curators, this exhibition marks Caguiat's institutional debut in the UK, signalling rising international interest in his multidisciplinary practice that merges architecture, spirituality, and environmental responsiveness. The show positions Serpentine as a platform for boundary-pushing contemporary art that activates the gallery itself as a medium.
