The Facts

SFMOMA has announced a major retrospective of Yoshitomo Nara, opening in Fall 2027 in the museum's Floor 7 galleries. The exhibition will bring together approximately 100 works across painting, drawing, sculpture, installation, sound and photography, marking the first comprehensive survey of Nara's work in Northern California. It is curated by Mika Yoshitake, guest curator, with Nancy Lim, SFMOMA associate curator of painting and sculpture. At the center will be the first international presentation of Voyage of the Moon (Resting Moon), 2006, a fairy-tale cottage crowned by a painted moon head.

The Signal

The retrospective positions Nara as a marquee draw for SFMOMA under director Christopher Bedford, aligning with the museum's push to expand local and global dialogues around art. For collectors, a museum survey of this scale—100 works spanning the artist's multidisciplinary output—typically reinforces institutional validation and long-term demand for an artist's work. The inclusion of post-2011 works, marked by intensified introspection, signals a deepening critical focus on Nara's later practice.
