The Facts
Lawrence Power has been named a Southbank Centre Resident Artist ahead of the centre's Autumn/Winter 2024/25 programme. The British viola player, who made his Philharmonia Orchestra debut at the start of the 21st century, has performed as a soloist with the London Symphony, BBC Symphony, Scottish Chamber and Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, among others. Power founded the Viola Commissioning Circle to broaden the instrument's repertoire, and he received the Cobbett Medal in 2023 for services to chamber music. He is also a member of the Nash Ensemble.
The Signal
The residency gives Power a prominent platform at the UK's largest arts centre at a time when institutions are increasingly foregrounding soloists committed to new music. His Viola Commissioning Circle has already generated a substantial new body of works for the instrument, a signal to programmers and audiences that the viola repertoire is expanding. For curators and followers of contemporary composition, Power's profile at Southbank Centre may also raise visibility for the composers commissioned through the initiative.
