Stedelijk Museum Adds 99 Works to Collection Presentation, Highlighting Female Artists and Global Acquisitions
The Stedelijk Museum announced on August 18, 2025, that 99 works of art and design have joined its collection presentation Tomorrow Is a Different Day. Three-quarters of the visual arts works are by women, and many are recent acquisitions shown publicly for the first time. The display covers art and design created after 1980 and addresses themes including power, in-betweenness, the Black gaze, protest, and upcycling through works by artists such as Natasja Kensmil, Yang Shaobin, Lydia Ourahmane, Carrie Mae Weems, Julie Mehretu, and Nan Goldin. Many pieces were donated by private individuals or acquired with support from the VriendenLoterij, Mondriaan Fund, and Rembrandt Society.
The Signal
The additions underscore the museum’s emphasis on female makers and emerging international artists confronting social and environmental issues. Works exploring migration, cultural hybridity, and activism, including pieces by Marcos Kueh, Benjamin Li, and Ellen Gallagher, signal sustained institutional investment in diverse contemporary voices. For collectors and curators, the public debut of these acquisitions highlights shifting priorities in Dutch public collections toward global perspectives and ecological concerns.
