Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam Acquires First Painting by Ellen Gallagher for Dutch Public Collection
The Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam has acquired Negroes Battling in a Cave (2016) by Ellen Gallagher, marking the first time a painting by the artist has entered a Dutch public collection. The four-part series of deep black monochromes features collage, incised lines, and subtle layers of imagery drawn from mid-century African American magazines. The work was acquired with support from the Mondriaan Fund, Vereniging Rembrandt, the Glenstone Foundation, Adriaan Mol, Dymfy Erens, and benefactors of the Stedelijk Museum Fund.
The Signal
The acquisition places the painting in dialogue with the museum’s holdings of Minimalism, abstraction, and Kazimir Malevich, underscoring connections between abstract art and broader cultural contexts. It expands the collection’s representation of artists whose layered approaches challenge traditional narratives shaped by white male voices. The reflective surfaces encourage sustained viewing, revealing associations that emerge with shifts in perspective.
