The Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam is presenting the final artwork of Wim T. Schippers, the Dutch artist, programme maker and actor who died recently, in a tribute exhibition running July 2–19, 2026. The work, titled "Wim is gone 1942-2026 (unfinished)" ("Wim is Weg 1942-2026 (onvoltooid)"), is being donated to the museum at Schippers' request. It is displayed alongside other works by the artist in the ABN AMRO gallery, near the entrance, with a condolence book for visitors. The museum holds 65 works by Schippers in its collection, including drawings, paintings, sculptures, installations, and 22 film and television works. The exhibition also features pieces such as "Hoog zwik" (1960–61), "Mnemosynum" (1966), and "The Lump" (1966), as well as episodes from his television shows "The Fred Haché Show" and "Van Oekel's Disco Corner."
The Signal
Schippers, a key figure in the Dutch Fluxus movement, first entered the Stedelijk's collection in 1959 when director Willem Sandberg purchased his drawings, a sale that led Schippers to leave the Rietveld Academy. His career spanned visual art, television, and theatre, marked by Dadaist provocations such as the 1961 adynamic manifesto and the peanut butter floor installation. This focused tribute underscores the Stedelijk's role as the primary institutional steward of Schippers' legacy, offering a concentrated view of his final statement alongside canonical works from his six-decade career.
