Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam Reimagines 1950–1980 Collection with Focus on Women and Global Abstraction
The Stedelijk Museum has redesigned its presentation of art from 1950 to 1980 to feature works unseen for decades paired with new acquisitions. The exhibition Everyday, Someday and Other Stories opens with a room dedicated to feminist art including Ana Mendieta's Untitled (Facial Hair Transplants) from 1972 and Magdalena Abakanowicz's Vêtement Noir from 1968, alongside works by Lee Bontecou, Nan Hoover, VALIE EXPORT and Martha Rosler. Helen Frankenthaler takes center stage in the American Abstract Expressionism section with her recently donated Beach Scene from 1961, shown with Barnett Newman, Jackson Pollock, Robert Motherwell and Willem de Kooning.
The Signal
The rehang broadens the narrative of postwar abstraction by including tantric works by Raja Babu Sharma, geometric sculptures by Naomi Kobayashi and performative pieces by Claudio Parmiggiani, while a gallery on rituals and spirituality features artists such as Bhupen Khakhar and Julio Galán. Kinetic and early computer art by Jean Tinguely, Nam June Paik and Peter Struycken is presented alongside conceptual works by Hans de Vries, Dennis Oppenheim and Ana Lupas, and a display of new materials includes the first showing since 1968 of all Hetty Huisman's ceramic works plus Bas Jan Ader's recently donated Untitled (Flower Work) from 1974. The changes indicate the museum's strategy to elevate lesser-known voices and recently acquired pieces within its core collection holdings.
