Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam to Open Formafantasma Exhibition Exploring Global Wool Production
The Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam will open the exhibition Oltre Terra on February 15, 2025, running through July 13, 2025. The show is based on an ongoing research project by design studio Formafantasma and explores the history, ecology and global dynamics of wool extraction and production along with its connection to sheep evolution. It features seven life-size sheep breed reproductions, the video Tactile Afferents by Joanna Piotrowska and Formafantasma, a wool carpet by cc-tapis and recycled wool bales by Manteco. The exhibition was originally commissioned by the National Museum of Oslo and is curated by Amanda Pinatih.
The Signal
The project highlights shifting boundaries between humans and animals through material extraction and co-domestication, offering curators and collectors insight into how institutions are integrating design research with ecological and ethical questions. Its expanded diorama format and captions by philosopher Emanuele Coccia demonstrate a model for presenting interdisciplinary content that links biological matter, production processes and cultural history. The inclusion of works by multiple collaborators signals growing institutional interest in transdisciplinary approaches that connect craft, anthropology and contemporary practice.
