The Facts
The Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam is presenting a KIDS Festival around Yayoi Kusama, powered by ABN AMRO, running from 10 to 18 October. The festival marks the opening of The Obliteration Room, Kusama's interactive installation in which children transform an all-white room by covering it with colourful dot stickers. The Stedelijk's larger Kusama survey spans more than seventy years of the artist's work, was developed with Kusama and her studio, and is described as one of the last major exhibitions in which she was personally involved. It also includes recent works made in Tokyo and a new immersive installation created for the Stedelijk.
The Signal
The festival positions the Stedelijk as a family-friendly destination while underscoring Kusama's broad appeal across generations. For collectors and curators, the survey's status as one of the last major shows personally overseen by the artist gives it particular art-historical weight, and the new immersive installation made for the Stedelijk adds a unique, site-specific element. The emphasis on participatory play also reflects a wider museum trend toward hands-on engagement as a way to build future audiences.
