Stedelijk Museum and Rijksmuseum Jointly Acquire Photographs by Carrie Mae Weems
On February 4, 2025, the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam and the Rijksmuseum acquired photographs by Carrie Mae Weems from her 2021 series Painting the Town. The Stedelijk purchased Painting the Town #2 with support from the Leferink family and the Mondriaan Fund. The Rijksmuseum acquired Painting the Town #3 and Painting the Town #4, funded by the Friends’ Lottery and the Women of the Rijksmuseum Fund. The series will be on view at the Rijksmuseum from February 7 to June 9, 2025.
The Signal
Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam has long sought work by Carrie Mae Weems, and the acquisition advances its photography collection by highlighting the dissolving boundaries between photography and art. The purchases coincide with the Rijksmuseum’s concurrent display of the series alongside its major American Photography exhibition. Weems’s focus on social issues such as racism and discrimination, recognized by the 2023 Hasselblad Award and 2024 National Medal of Arts, signals sustained institutional interest in photographers addressing contemporary American society.
