The Stedelijk Museum presents Erwin Olaf – Freedom from October 11, 2025 until April 6, 2026. The exhibition is the first museum retrospective since the artist’s death in 2023 and surveys his career through iconic series including Ladies Hats, Chessmen, Royal Blood, Grief, Berlin and Skin Deep along with videos, sculptures, commercial work and archive material. It concludes with the unfinished video For Life and marks the first museum showing of Im Wald and April Fool.

The Signal

The retrospective underscores Olaf’s role as an activist whose staged photography advanced themes of identity, sexuality and equality across four decades. For curators and collectors it supplies the most complete institutional reading of an artist whose market has been driven by limited-edition prints and whose final series address mortality and cultural change, offering context that may influence future acquisitions and programming.
