Stefan Gierowski Foundation to Present Dual Exhibition of Stefan Gierowski and Sean Scully
The Stefan Gierowski Foundation presents Beyond the Line: From Finite to Infinite, From Physics to Metaphysics, an exhibition curated by Joachim Pissarro that brings together 60 paintings by Stefan Gierowski (1925-2022) and Sean Scully (b. 1945). The show examines the parallel trajectories of the two abstract artists whose careers overlapped for six decades despite their birth dates being two decades apart. It includes Gierowski's rare early figurative works alongside his later abstract compositions and Scully's 1970s Op art-influenced pieces together with his later works fusing figuration and abstraction.
The Signal
The exhibition highlights both artists' rejection of dominant 20th-century movements originating in Russia and the United States in favor of independent European approaches to abstraction. Gierowski developed a visual language exploring space, color, line and light while Scully has maintained his signature block motif since 1981 after moving away from Abstract Expressionism and Minimalism. The presentation offers a view of each artist's full career arc and their shared emphasis on resistance to mainstream trends.
