The Facts
Artist and composer Tarek Atoui opens his Hyundai Commission "Hold" at Tate Modern's Turbine Hall on October 13, 2026, transforming the vast industrial space into an immersive sonic landscape. The installation combines custom-built wind instruments, percussion, electronics and sculptural objects, including a metal karnai from Uzbekistan, 3D-printed horns, 20-meter textiles, bamboo and shengs, with wind channelled by a computer-controlled motor. It runs through April 11, 2027, with free admission daily from 10.00 to 18.00, and until 21.00 on Fridays and Saturdays. Curated by Nabila Abdel Nabi and Dina Akhmadeeva, the work is the 11th Hyundai Commission, supported by Tate's partnership with Hyundai Motor.
The Signal
The commission reflects Hyundai's unusually long institutional commitment, a partnership launched in 2014 and extended to 2036, which has drawn more than 21.6 million visitors since it began. For artists, the commission offers rare scale and resources for sound-based practice, generating visibility for experimental works that fuse ancient instruments with new technologies. For audiences, "Hold" positions the Turbine Hall as a gathering place, continuing the series' track record of bold installations.
