The Facts

Tate has announced the 2026–27 programme for its Hyundai Tate Research Centre: Transnational, with Hyundai Motor's partnership extended until 2036. The Annual Symposium, 'Transnational Resistances', opens at Tate Modern on November 6, 2026, a two-day event with IMMA and Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art, featuring Bernadette Devlin, Zeina Maasri, Basel Abbas & Ruanne Abou-Rahme and Dr Isobel Harbison. Centre research underpins the Ana Mendieta exhibition, open until January 17, 2027, and the free display 'Teach by Example', on view until June 2027. In 2027 it supports 'Ink' (April 22–August 30, 2027), Tate's first ink-painting exhibition, and 'A Year in Art: Lebanon 1990', opening April 12, 2027.

The Signal

Hyundai's extension to 2036 gives Tate long-term funding for research embedded in its public programme, from the Ana Mendieta exhibition to a first ink-painting survey. Adjunct curatorial posts in indigeneity, ecology, Africa and the Caribbean diaspora—plus a new art and spirituality role in 2027—signal a commitment to broadening the canon beyond Western narratives. For curators and artists, the programme makes transnational research a driver of exhibitions and acquisitions, not just scholarship.
