Tate Modern to Host Major Frida Kahlo Survey in Collaboration with MFA Houston
Tate Modern will present Frida: The Making of an Icon beginning June 25, 2026. The exhibition, developed in collaboration with the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, features more than 30 works by Frida Kahlo along with photographs, personal artifacts and works by other artists. It examines Kahlo's evolution from relatively unknown painter to global icon through self-portraits and dialogues with artists from the Mexican Renaissance to the present. The show runs through January 3, 2027, at Tate Modern in London.
The Signal
The presentation at Tate Modern highlights Kahlo's sustained influence on themes of identity, gender and disability across generations of artists. Curators and collectors will see her work placed alongside pieces by Judy Chicago, Ana Mendieta and Kiki Smith, indicating continued institutional focus on her legacy. The inclusion of over 200 objects tracing her commercial image further signals the breadth of her cultural reach beyond the art market.
