Tate Modern to Open 'Theatre Picasso' Exhibition Marking Centenary of 'The Three Dancers'
Tate Modern presents Theatre Picasso, an exhibition of more than 50 works by Pablo Picasso that marks the centenary of The Three Dancers 1925 and runs from 17 September 2025 to 12 April 2026. The show, staged by artist Wu Tsang and curator Enrique Fuenteblanca, places the painting at its centre alongside Weeping Woman 1937, Nude Woman in a Red Armchair 1932 and loans from Musée Picasso Antibes and Musée national Picasso-Paris. It also includes prints, drawings, sculptures, textiles and the 1956 film The Mystery of Picasso, together with a performance programme featuring dance and flamenco.
The Signal
The presentation underscores Tate Modern’s continued focus on foundational 20th-century figures during its 25th-anniversary year and reframes Picasso’s interest in performers, theatricality and self-mythologising for contemporary audiences. By commissioning responses from dancers and choreographers, the exhibition signals how museums are using live programming to extend the interpretive life of historic works and to test their relevance to current questions of identity and marginality.
