Thaddaeus Ropac Artist Heemin Chung in SONGEUN Art Award 25th Anniversary Exhibition
The Facts
On August 19, 2026, Thaddaeus Ropac gallery announced that artist Heemin Chung, a finalist of the 22nd SONGEUN Art Award in 2022, is participating in a group exhibition titled “SONGEUN x Unboxing Project: Generative Forms.” The show marks the 25th anniversary of the SONGEUN Art Award and brings together 179 past winners and finalists. Each participant created a new work using a box containing four sheets of plywood measuring 25 x 25 cm. Established in 2001, the award was founded to foster sustainable creative environments and support emerging artists’ long-term practices.
The Signal
The exhibition positions Heemin Chung within a generation of Korean artists recognized by the award over two and a half decades. The uniform plywood-box format imposes a material constraint that emphasizes individual artistic invention, making the show a collective survey of approaches from a significant local prize. For collectors, Chung’s inclusion alongside 178 other award alumni reinforces her standing in Korea’s contemporary scene, while the involvement of Thaddaeus Ropac signals her international gallery representation.
