Thaddaeus Ropac Opens Final Painting Series by Georg Baselitz at Fondazione Giorgio Cini in Venice
Thaddaeus Ropac has inaugurated "Eroi d’Oro" (Heroes of Gold) at the Fondazione Giorgio Cini, featuring the final paintings completed by Georg Baselitz before his death in April at age 88. The exhibition on the island of San Giorgio Maggiore presents large-scale works characterized by gold grounds and minimalist figurative drawings of the artist and his wife, Elke. Baselitz described the series as a summation of his 60-year career, utilizing gold to create a spaceless environment inspired by Byzantine icons and Fayum mummy portraits.
