Thaddaeus Ropac Presents Georg Baselitz's Last Sculpture at Salzburg Festival
The Facts
Thaddaeus Ropac is presenting Georg Baselitz's final sculptural work, 'Stravinsky' (2026), in the foyer of the Großes Festspielhaus during the Salzburg Festival. The bronze sculpture, over three meters long, was cast shortly before Baselitz's death and is his only work with an entirely white patina. It honors composer Igor Stravinsky and is connected to Baselitz's set design for the festival's production of 'L'Histoire du Soldat' staged last year at the Marionette Theatre. The work will be on view for the entire duration of the 2026 Salzburg Festival.
The Signal
The sculpture marks the culmination of Baselitz's sculptural practice, which began with his first sculpture at the German Pavilion of the 1980 Venice Biennale. Its unique white patina and late timing make it a standout piece in his oeuvre. For collectors, this work represents a rare opportunity to acquire a final statement from one of Germany's most influential contemporary artists, and it underscores Thaddaeus Ropac's role in stewarding the artist's legacy.
