Thaddaeus Ropac Publishes Gilbert & George Interview at Spitalfields Home
June 18, 2026, Gilbert Prousch, 82, and George Passmore, 84, of the art duo Gilbert & George welcomed an interviewer to their four-storey 18th-century Georgian townhouse on Fournier Street in Spitalfields, east London. The pair have occupied the property since the late 1960s, when they rented the ground floor for £16 a month, and now own the entire building. They maintain no kitchen, electing instead to eat out or have meals delivered daily. The artists appeared in matching tweed suits, having switched from Scottish to Irish fabric in 2014.
The Signal
The interview offers collectors and curators direct insight into the duo’s unchanging daily routine and long-term commitment to their London base. Their integrated approach to living and working in one location reinforces the continuity of their practice, which has consistently addressed provocative themes across more than five decades. The account underscores how the artists’ domestic choices support uninterrupted studio time.
