Thaddaeus Ropac: Robert Rauschenberg Foundation Donates Three 'Glut' Works to Artist Rooms
The Facts
On July 14, 2026, Thaddaeus Ropac announced that the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation has donated three works from the artist's "Gluts" series (1986–87) to Artist Rooms, a collection jointly managed by Tate and the National Galleries of Scotland. The sculptures—G-I Glut (1986), Rasputin's Revenge Early Winter Glut (1987), and Mobile Cluster Glut (Neapolitan) (1987)—are made from found metal and continue Rauschenberg's practice of transforming ready-made materials, seen earlier in his Combines. Rauschenberg considered the series a commentary on excess amid the US oil surplus. The works will go on view in September 2026 at Tate Modern in a gallery of 25 Rauschenberg pieces. The "Gluts" series was previously the subject of a 2009 exhibition at the Guggenheim Museum.
The Signal
The donation elevates the "Gluts" series within the institutional canon, potentially increasing collector demand for Rauschenberg's post-Combine output. The works' inclusion at Tate Modern provides significant exposure, and Artist Rooms' touring structure may extend their reach across the UK. The series' environmental and social commentary remains timely.
